Guest guest
The Rg Vedic Ratri Sukta "Encountering the Goddess" by Thomas B Coburn The goddess Ratri (night) approaches, illuminating manifold places with her eyes: She has put on all her glories. The immotal goddess has filled up the broad expanse, the heights and depths; With (her own) light, she drives out the darkness (tamas). The goddess approaches, replacing her sister Usas (dawn). May this darkness also disappear, (May you stand) by us now, at whose coming we go to rest, Like birds to their nest in a tree. To rest have gone the villagers, as have all legged and winged creatures, Even the greedy hawks. Ward off the she-wolf and the wolf, ward off the thief, O Ratri, And be easy for us to get through. Distinctly has the plastering black darkness come unto me. O Dawn, may you collect (it) like a debt! Accept, O daughter of heaven, what I have presented you as if (it were a herd of) cattle, (Namely,) this hymn, (presented) as if to a conqueror, O Ratri. pages 183-184 ISBN: 0791404463 This is where I first read of the Goddess Ushas, myself and I think of her and Maa each morning as the Dawn collects the darkness of night and paints the sky blue and gold again. This Sukta is said to be one of Maa's favorites with "The Rg Vedic Devi Sukta" --- she is said to smile when offered a reading of these by her Devotee! I read them to Maa each pooja I do for and with her when by my self at home. I present them here for you today on this wonderful Friday and before I do my pooja for Maa. I make this offering to and for all of you, since we are apart of Maa inseparable from her --- she is Brahman --- she is the Supreme. Jai Maa!!! Jai Mahakali!!!
