Guest guest
If the Western method of measuring a week by seven days is abolished, us Orientalists would be counting time using the lunar days: first day of the lunar month, second day, fourteen day, twenty-ninth day. I find it interesting that the Western seven days are derived from the Norse/Asatru traditions. Wednesday being God Woden's day, Thursday - God Thor's, Tuesday - God Tyr's, and Friday - Goddess Freya's day. Freya's very high status in the Asatru pantheon corresponds to Devi's in the Hindu pantheon. The point I am trying to put forth is: the general popularity of designating Friday as a day to venerate or observe vratam for the Supreme Goddess was not a predilection unique to the Hindus only, nor can it be a mere coincidence that the origins of Friday itself has associations with the Supreme Goddess of another non-Hindu spiritual tradition (Freya, Asatru/Vanir). Perhaps Shaktism's old battle-cry that Mother is universal carries more truth than we are prepared to realize. Iconically (and comically) speaking, it really does not take much to transform Mother Durga into a Scandinavian diva. Just replace the trident with a spear, the lion with a horse, dye Her hair blonde and braid it, plop on a Norse helmut, and voila... Goddess Freya! Jai Ma!
