Namaste Satyenji,

I respect your point of view and I fully agree that a

qualified guru is the best blessing that a sadhaka can

have to avoid pitfalls in his path. But even without a

guru, one can make progress. Did not Sankaracharya in

his Atma Bodha(or Tattwa bodha or Vivekachudamani I

can not remember which one) say that a guru makes a

only a fourth-contribution to a students

progress.Indeed texts like the Yoga-Vashishta seem to

discount the grace of the guru altogether. Maa

Karunamayi says that the sadhaka says that has to

bring by his own efforts his consciousness to the

level of the Ajna chakra; from the Ajna to the

Sahasrara, it is the Guru's job. One only has to look

at the history of Bharatavarsha to see how many people

had attained Self-Realisation without a physical Guru-

Swami Sivananda, Maa Anandamayi, Mata Amritanandamayi,

Aurobindo, Ramana Maharshi, Mooka swamigal(a Kanchi

Sankaracharya to whom Mother Kamakshi had appeared

personally appeared), several of the Nayanar saints-

these are some names that come to mind. Perhaps as

Swami Sivananda has said, the guru's grace was there

in a previous guru.

While I await my Guru, I still not going to put off

sadhana till he arrives. IMHO, siddhi in any mantra is

theoretically possible without the guru albeit very

difficult.

Re: pancanguli devi

Namaste!

Pancanguli devi has to do with

astrology; once you

have attained the siddhi of her

mantra, you will know

about the past, present and

future of anyone you meet.

She has a special yantra, which

has to be ritually

worhipped and a very long stotra

both of which are

needed to ger her siddhi. If

interested I can try to

dig up the stotra.

You said, "One only has to look at the history of Bharatavarsha to

see how many people had attained Self-Realisation without a

physical Guru- Swami Sivananda..."

Swami Sivananda did indeed have a Guru, Swami Visvananda.

Here is a quote from the Divine Life Society website:

"At last, Dr. Kuppuswamy [swami Sivananda], enjoying a

lucrative practice, renounced the world like Prince Siddartha, in

1923. He left Malaya for India.

"Dr. Kuppuswamy reached Rishikesh on the 8th of May, 1924.

On the 1st of June, 1924, there came His Holiness Sri Swami

Visvananda Saraswati. The doctor saw a Guru in the monk and

the monk saw a Chela (disciple) in the doctor. After a brief

exchange of words, Dr. Kuppuswamy was initiated into the

Sannyas order by Swami Visvananda. Swami

Vishnudevanandaji Maharaj, the Mahant of Sri Kailas Ashram,

performed the Viraja Homa ceremonies. The Guru named the

doctor Swami Sivananda Saraswati. Swami Visvananda wrote

the necessary instructions about Sannyas Dharma from

Benares. Swami Sivanandaji stayed at Swargashram for

Sadhana."

Swami Sivananda did not spend a lot of time with his Guru but

he did spend enough time with him.

Swami Sivananda has this to say about Gurus in his book, Bliss

Divine:

"For a beginner on the spiritual path, a Guru is necessary. To

light a candle, you need a burning candle. Even so, an illumined

soul alone can enlighten another soul."

"A Guru is absolutely necessary for every aspirant on the spiritual

path."

"Do not use your reason too much in the selection of your

Guru...If you fail to find a first-class Guru, try to follow the

instructions of the Sadhu who is treading the path for some

years, and who has some knowlege of the scriptures...If you are

not able to fine even this second-class type of Guru, you can

follow the teachings contained in the books written by realised

saints like Sri Sankara, Dattatreya and others. You can keep a

photo of such a realised Guru, if available, and worship the

same with faith and devotion. Gradually you will get inspiration,

and the Guru may appear in a dream and initiate and inspire you

at the proper moment. For a sincere Sadhak, help comes in a

mysterious way.."

"Competent disciples are never in want of a competent Guru.

Realised souls are not rare...So long as there is a world, there

are Gurus and Vedas to guide the struggling souls in the path of

Self-realisation."

You right to continue your sadhana and prepare yourself for the

eventual appearance of your Guru.
