Guest guest Posted October 7, 2002 Report Share Posted October 7, 2002 To the continuous chats of OM Sakthi, some 2,000 devotees of the Mel Maruvathur Adi Parasakthi Sittar Peedam dressed in red lit 1,008 sakthi lamps to pray for world peace and national prosperity at Batu Caves. Many devotees kept the flames at the 108 Yaagam burning while prayers were recited for about two-and-a-half hours yesterday. Organising committee chairman V. Thachnamurthi said this was the first time such a large number of devotees who had come from throughout the country were participating in the ceremony to pray for peace and prosperity. `We had organized a similar prayer on a smaller scale, with 54 yaagam in Jalan Ipoh, seven years ago," he said, adding that the devotees were members of the Om Shakti Spiritual and Charitable Organisation. Thachnamurthi who is also the president, said the prayers were held to cleanse the negative feelings in people and also provide a prominent role for women to play in the spiritual enlightment of family members. "We want the women, who are leaders of the house, to participate and return home to educate their children and other family members on spiritual development. "This will help reduce social crimes amongst the Indian Community." He said, adding that the prayers were held on an auspicious day, at the Start of the nine-day Navarathri festival. Thachnamurthi said the organization had also worked with the Malaysian Hindu Sangam to distribute delicacies to inmates at the various prisons in the country for the past 10 years. "We also visit old folks homes and provide services to the elderly regularly," he added The Star, Monday October 2002.
