May the daughter of Kalinda ever cleanse my mind of its impurity,

She whose waters, beauteous as the black body of the enemy of Mura,

Cleanse the overgrowth of plants and shrubs which line its pleasant

banks.

Indra;s heaven compared with Thy waters is but a thing of straw.

Destructress of the sorrow of the three worlds –

Dhunotu me manomalam Kalindanandini sada

May the daughter of Kalinda ever cleanse my mind of its impurity.

She whose stream is highly adorned with overflowing water

Destructress of sin, dark as night, like unto nectar,

Greatly powerful for the destruction of all great sins,

Benedicent One who is black of colour,

Through company with the body of the good son of Nanda

Dhunotu me manomalam Kallindanandini sada

May the daughter of Kalinda ever cleanse my mind of its impurity,

The touch of whose shining waves washes away the sins of multitudes

of beings

Devoted to Thee is the Cataka bird, receptacle that Thou art of

freshness and sweetness.

Giver of desires,

On the borders of whose banks swans ever dwell,

Dhunotu me manomalam Kallindanandini sada

May the daughter of Kalinda ever cleanse my mind of its impurity,

The gently breeze on Her Banks dispels the lassitude

Of those who have rembled and played thereon,

The beauty of Her waters is beyond the power of words;

It is, indeed, the consortment with Her current,

Which putifies all rives, male and female, on the earth,

Dhunotu me manomalam Kallindanandini sada

May the daughter of Kalinda ever cleanse my mind of its impurity,

Destroyed by ( the whiteness of) Her sandy banks laved by Her waters;

She who is ever white,

Adorned with blossoms beauteous as the rays of the autumn moon,

May she then purify me by Her waters,

Most excellent that they are for the worship of Bhava,

(By her white splendour), Destructress of the darkness of night –

Dhunotu me manomalam Kallindanandini sada

May the daughter of Kalinda ever cleanse my mind of its impurity.

The paste and unguents of the beauteous Radhika

Colours Her waters in which Radhika plays.

Possessor is She of the body of the husband of Radhika

Which by none other m ay be possessed.

Skilled is She in making Her way through the seven sleeping oceans,

And in filling them with waters –

Dhunotu me manomalam Kallindanandini sada

May the daughter of Kalinda ever cleanse my mind of its imputity!

Her stream is beauteous with the women of the cowherds,

Made passionate by the scent of the paste and unguent,

Dropped therein from off the body of Acyuta,

Garlanded is She with clusters of Champak flowers,

Set in the flowing hair of Radhika.

Of all such as come to bathe in Her waters

Neither is one the servant nor the other masters,

Dhunotu me manomalam Kallindanandini sada

May the daughter of Kalinda ever cleanse my mind of its impurity!

Pleasant always sis She with groves,

Where Nandanandi ever played.

Bright is She with the ripened blossom

Of the Kadamba and mallika flowers upon Her banks

It is She who safely carries across the ocean of the world,

All such men as bathe in Her stream

Dhunotu me manomalam Kallindanandini sada

Dear Nora,

THANK you for these verses on river YAMUNA devi! Since our beloved

LOrd KRISHNA conducted his glorious pastimes on the baks of river

yamuna along with his divine consort Smt. RADHARANI and the gopikas,

this river has a special place in my gopi heart! also, i was born in

delhi which is situated on the banks of river jamuna or yamuna.... m

mother's maiden name happens to be JAMUNA as well!!! no wonder i have

such a reverance for this great river goddess... i wonder if krishna

bhktin hari_ pyari is still a member of this forum... she can do a

great job of describing the glorious pastimes of shri radhakrishna on

the banks of this sacred river yamuna...

This river is sacred because it flows through Vrindavana and

Mathura, and was thus intimately connected to Lord Krishna's pastimes.

"As far as sanctity is concerned, the River Yamuna is more directly

connected with Lord Krishna than the Ganges. The Lord sanctified the

River Yamuna from the beginning of His transcendental pastimes in the

world. While His father Vasudeva was crossing the Yamuna with baby

Lord Krishna for a safe place at Gokula on the other bank of the

river from Mathura, the Lord fell down in the river, and by the dust

of His lotus feet the river at once became sanctified." (Srimad

Bhagavatam 1.19.6)

Krishna devotees claim...

""A bath in this river is said to be one hundred times more purifying

than a bath in the Ganges. The reason being that even though the

Ganges was once touched by the feet of Lord Vishnu, it was the Yamuna

where Lord Krishna Himself played and swam with His cowherd

boyfriends; He also sported in its waters with the beautiful gopi

damsels of Vraja."

as per legend,

Right among the peaks, the dark-complexioned Yamuna parted with the

fair-complexioned Ganga, and reached a peak Kalind, to start her

journey downwards since Yamuna began her journey downwards from the

peak Kalind, hence she got an epithet Kalindi. Crossing and piercing

many peaks and wetting expansive planes in the way, Yamuna reached

Khandav Vana, where the modern city of Delhi stands.

Yamuna had longed to see almighty Lord Krishna as her husband. Hence

taking the guise of an extremely pretty woman, she began severe

penance in Khandava Vana. Lord Surya, Yamuna's father, built an under

water palace there for her to tale rest. It is believed that she

still resides there. From Khandava Vana, Kalindi travel fast to reach

Vrindavana and Mathura in Vraja region.

In Gokul, the extremely pretty Yamuna constituted a group of teenaged

girls to participate is Raas of Lord Krishna. She also selected an

abode there for permanent stay.

>From Vraj, Yamuna continues her journey due south and south-east ward

purifying many regions in the way. She reached Prayag, the holiest

among all the holy places of pilgrimage. There she meets again with

Ganga. Both of them travel together from Prayag onwards upto Ksheer

Sagar.

Near the sea, with over whelming Yamuna says: Gangey, you are great

that you originate right from the feet of shri vishnu. (hence ganga

is called vishnupadi) . You are venerable in all the three world.

>From here, I am ascending again to reach the abode of Shri Hari. If

you wish, you may also accompany me.

Ganga says: Yamuney you have the power of sanctifying the whole

universe. You originate from the left part of Lord Krishna. You are

an embodiment of the supreme joy. You are the queen consort of Lord

Krishna, hence venerable in the whole world. Your sight is rare, even

to the gods. I greet you. But I can't accompany you. as per shri

vishnu's desire, I now go to the Patal Loka.

Thus, both of them greeted each other and went to their respective

destinations. Yamuna ascended in the form of jog like stream, on the

tops of the peaks. Thence, rising sky wards, she reached to the

heaven. From there she reached Lord's Krishna Goloka via Brahma Loka,

her original abode.

**********************************************************************

but as we all know , there are no real comparisons! for ganga

ascended directly from the matted locks of Lord shiva and LORD

KRISHNA'S lotus feet touchd the holy river yamuna... so, both are

worshippable!!!

love
