If the visa is valid six months it means you have six months to enter the country. Then there is the lenght of stay allowed, for example you can get a three months tourist visa, which can be extended a further three months without too much trouble at any Indian immigration office. Other kind of visa are students visa (granted for a full year stay) but you must show proof of actual enrollment in an Indian university. Hope this does clarify things regarding visa validity and length of stay granted.
