I think the author was trying to say that the Devi makes her first appearance in a narrative or story form in the Devi Mahatmya, which from the Vedic side of Hinduism comes from the Markandeya Purana. I would be interested to see the verses of the rkveda concerning Kali. Devi Kali also comes from the Parasha Tantra and Bhairava tantra both predating the Devi Mahatmaya, Kali puja and the tantra of Kali relates mostly to kaula which is the oldest tantric sect known to man. >You are close. The oldest of the Trika is the Krama school, of which Kali is the predominant mode of worship, which is the only one of the three 'schools' of Trika or Kashmir Shaivism to worship the Supreme in feminine form. The Krama worships the 12, not 10 forms of Kali in Her four modes each of objectivity, knowledge, and subjectivity. Krama is almost extinct except to a few of us who hold it to our bosom.
