Guest guest
In the old Club forum, we had a couple of lively discussions about the Santoshi Ma, the *very* popular Goddess of Contentment, widely worshiped across India, particularly in the North I think. The interesting thing about this is that Santoshi Ma is an extremely recent conception of the Eternal Devi-- in fact, Her popularity can be precisely dated to the release of a popular religious movie that came out only in 1975! Curious? Then read this excellent analysis of the film, written by Philip Lutgendorf, who is Associate Professor of Hindi and Modern Indian Studies and co-chair of the South Asian Studies Program at the University of Iowa: http://www.uiowa.edu/~incinema/santoshimaa.html
