Guest guest
AUM gaNapataye namaH Moving from the importance of fire in rituals, the next most common thing encountered is flowers. Why flowers? "Contact with flowers in the earliest hours of the day refreshes and energizes the human system in a most pleasing and beneficial manner. Not only are flowers visually attractive, but they have a psychic link with the human mind. The flower is the most evolved part of the plant, the essence of the plant. It is the flower for which the whole plant sprouts, grows, and develops. The flower is the part that reproduces the whole plant in its microcosmic seed form. Flowers are the most sattvic part of the plant, and contact with them during the predawn and early morning hours charges the human spirit with sattvic energy. Flowers can be divided into two broad categories on the basis of color and smell. The first group is flowers that have strong colors but little or no smell. The second group consists of the relatively colorless flowers that nonetheless have a strong fragrance. The purpose of both color and odor is to attract insects for pollination, the most sattvic of purposes -- for it is this pollination that keeps the link of consciousness growing. The color of the flower reflects the color of the season, and by seeing these natural seasonal hues the human nervous system is attuned to the energy of the moment. The same is true for the fragrance of the pollen, which is a factor to attune the human nervous system to the energy of the moment by stimulating the olfactory system. The pollen also contains complex combinations of chemicals that provide the system with highly concentrated sattvic energy in a form directly assimilable by the tissues. It is customary to use flowers as an offering to God. The flower, because of its fragrance, symbolizes the purest form of the earth element. The human body is made of earth -- the skin, flesh, bones, hair, nerves, and capillaries all are earth. The freshness and delicacy of flowers also serves as a psychic link between man and plant. Literature is full of praises for flowers, and poets compare endlessly the glories of flowers with human fantasies. Flowers also have a tremendous effect on human sexuality and increse stamina and pleasure in both sexes. Similarly, there are hundreds of diseases cured by wearing flowers. One who wears bouquets of flowers finds the glamor and glaze of the complexion enhanced, evil influences dissapated, sexual energy increased, disease banished, and wealth increased. For these reson alone flowers should be made a part of everyday life. Colorful flowers also help the human organism by aabsorbing the outgoing current of energy radiated by the body and giving their own coloration back in to the system. Flowers also pick up human emotional vibrations. They stay alive longer if properly cared for and attended. Fragrant flowers have a more magical effect and are more sensitive to human vibrations; their color is generally very light and more visually soothing than the brighter flowers, and thus are more pleasant and beneficial." --from "Dhanwantari" by Harish Johari AUM lalitAyai namaH
Guest guest
Thank you SivaDancer for this beautiful article Can I say then Sivadancer that flowers is itself symbolizes life. Flowers goes through the process of birth, growth and thereafter death ( compared to plant, flowers dies off faster), just like us. So when we offer flowers to the goddess & god, it is like offering ourselves to their feet. Surrendering our total devotion and passion to the divine one. Flowers too symbolizes feminity. Once I spoke to a Japanese lady who taught me about flower arrangement. The act of arranging flowers can sometimes be very sacred and spiritual. Its like our life. How we approach life, is reflected in the way we arrange our flowers. When I asked her about plastic flowers, she said : "Plastic/fake flowers are an insult to life" OM ParaShaktiye Namaha
Guest guest
Beautiful, Nora! In fact, Parvati always places her hands on Shiva's 3rd eye and removes all the flowers that are offered to Him. This is because flowers are 'prakriti' or women and if Shiva opens his third eye they will perish... Thank you Parvati! Guest guest
This is fascinating: So Parvati keeps Shiva from prakriti? Kathy sivadancer <sivadancer wrote:Beautiful, Nora! Guest guest
Interesting Sivadancer! There is also the story of Parvati covering Siva's third eye, the whole world became engulfed in darkness and from a few drops of sweat around his third eye, was born Andhaka who became the leader of the asuras later on. After all is not the third eye of Siva, the eye of liberation as well as the eye of transformation and not just the eye of destruction; it depends on which of his 5 forms(aghora, isana, sadasiva, sadjoyata and rudra) the third eye is on, each form representing a particular aspect. yogaman , "sivadancer" <sivadancer> wrote: > Beautiful, Nora! Guest guest
I always view liberation as the destruction of the ongoing cycle of death and rebirth--a major transformation.
