Animal sacrifice stems from rituals held in the Sat and Treta Yugas.

Pure souls living in these times were peaceful and innocent and were

easy prey for the animal predators of this time. When someone is eaten

by an animal, their soul becomes a part of the animal. Therefore,

rituals were held to slay the animal, thus releasing the soul from its

animal bondage. However, the soul retains part of its animal soul as

well, and thus is no longer the pure soul it once was. It is said that

in this Kali Yuga, virtually everyone on the planet has part animal

souls, hence our difficulties overcoming our animal instincts. Also,

the animal sacrifices held in the Kali Yuga are virtually

non-effective in releasing souls.
