Guest guest
Simply wonderful. Thank you for sharing that. Annapurna is the form of DEVI who is closest and dearest to me. My life from birth since seems to be an endless procession of tasty meals: appetizers, main courses, snacks, desserts and the-desserts- after-desserts.(oink) The best way a sadhaka can honor this most compassionate of DEVI's many forms is to always maintain an attitude of gratefulness for any meal one receives, however simple and small it may be. Refraining from wastage of food is yet another way. Guest guest
Yes! Annapurna devi is a great choice for 'devi of the wee' specially during this time of the year... well, we will be meeting with family and friends soon for celebrating the 'spirit' of the season - that is the 'spirit of giving and receiving' - and who else do we thank first -Goddess Annapurna Devi! FOR, DEAR ONES , can we pray on an empty stomach? Mukthi (liberation) comes only after bhukthi( enjoyment)! she is our bhukthi-mukthi pradayini! Annapurna has always been a favorite deity of mine.! in fact, in my altar i have a beautiful bronze vigraha of the annapurna deity i bought from KASHI a few years ago... The meaning of the word "annapurna" literally is one who is fulll of abundant food. it is believed, if you worship annapurna devi, you will never go hungry. in this sese, annapurna is a true MOTHER-beacause she "nourishes" her devotess and looks after her devotees just like a mother looks after her children. also, Annapurna has no weapons in her hands- LIKE OTHER GODDESSES. Rather, she has a cooking pot full of "anna" (food) and a big "spoon" or ladle in her hands. we all know we cannot live without food -so by giving us food, in fact, moter annapurna devi is keeping us alive- she supports us- food is indeed "brahman" says the uPANISHADS! ONCE, SAGE VYASA was visiting kashi and he had a difficult time getting alms in that city he was so hungry that he got angry and put a curse obn the city that kashi will be impoverished for ever- there will be no wealth, knowledge, liberation for generations. but, sage vyasa did not give up... he continued to beg for alms till he reached a house where Shiva and Parvati had taken human form as a married couple. Parvati welcomed sage vyasa and served him a delicious feast. once sage vyasa's hunger was satisfied, he was immensely pleased - he removed the curse and said " kashi is the best place to live because one can get food and liberation at the same time." but lord shiva wanted to teach sage vyasa a lesson so he banished the sage from kashi.. permitting him to visit only on the eighth and fourteenth day of the fortnight, which are days respectively to the Goddess and Shiva. In order to be near at hand, Vyasa took up residence on the other side of river Ganges, where his temple may still be seen at Ramnagar. our beloved adi shankara has composed a beautiful hymn praising the glories of annapurna devi. O Mother Annapurna, O Great Goddess, ever bestowing happiness, granting gifts and dispelling fear, O Thou ocean of beauty who bestowest purity on Thy devotees) washing away all (their) sins, Thou art verify the Great Goddess who purifiest the family of Himalayas; Presiding Deity of Kashi, O Receptacle of Mercy! Grant me alms. O Mother Annapurna, Thou holdest a golden ladle adorned with various kinds of gems in Thy right hand and a vessel full of delicious porridge in Thy left; Thou art the Great Goddess of fortune, Thou fulfillest the desiresof Thy devotees and makest their destiny propitious; presiding Deity of Kashi, O Receptacle of Mercy! Grant me alms. ********************************************************************** to read the entire annapurnashtakam , visit shakti sadhana web page! if you want to hear the 'annapurnashtakam' visit ww.musicindia.com and listen this sloka sung by m.s.subbalaxmi in her melodious voice. ********************************************************************** thank you nora for the beautiful picture of annapurna devi and the 'annapurna' peak of mount evereest in Nepal, a tekker's favorite! with all my love --
Guest guest
Hello Gene Refraining from wastage of food is yet another way. Refraining from throwing food should be avoided. I was watching an MTV once and this popular group was throwing food at each other. Its a play to them and they were laughing. I was horrified when I saw such scene, that I switch it off and wouldnt allow my daughter to watch it. I dont think so throwing food at each other is funny at all. I know some may think, ah! its okay. To me it is not. Jai Ma Annapurna Om ParaShaktiye Namaha
Guest guest
Namaste Nora, I could not agree more. A sadhaka who has any respect for the law of karma does not need a great imagination to guess what retribution he/she will get in the next life for wasting food now. In his time, Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi (that's Lord Dakshinamurthi-Shiva to the rest of us) instructed that vegetable peelings should not even be thrown away but given to the cows. That is an example worth noting. I was guilty of food fights in my foolish youth. I make up for that now by sometimes picking up the food I'd dropped and eating it straightaway. Someone, invite me to your Christmas Day party now! I guarantee your floors will be clean. Jai Ma Annapurna Om Namo Bhagavate Sri Ramanaya* (*: Shaivites, do not forget this upcoming Dec 29)
Guest guest
I fully agree with you. It is food and there are crores of people in the world who donot get such food !!!!! Hence, it should not be allowed even our generations to watch or enjoy such "foolish ads" ! Let Annapoorani Ma only take care of such people !!!!
