Jammu, Kashmir, February 4, 2003: Over 100,750 pilgrims have visited

the holy cave shrine of Vaishno Devi during January this year, an

official spokesman said on Tuesday.

At present 4,000 to 5,000 pilgrims are reaching the shrine daily and

during the last two weeks of January over 75,000 devotees worshipped

at the cave shrine. Extensive arrangements are in place for the

devotees such as free accommodations at the shrine board in

Adhkunwari and blankets.

Dear DB,

In the past few years this yatra has been made dangerous by random

attacks on 'yatris' by radical groups. I didn't see too much press on

that this year are you aware of any? Hopefully this section of the

world will find some degree peace and it will be safe again to travel

Namaste, Frank ...

Yes, I think that the subtext of this oddly abbreviated article was

the idea that the rising number of Vaishno Devi pilgrims indicates a

kind of informal poll of public confidence in the stability of the

region. I don't know of any specific attacks, however. Hopefully, the

rising activity at this yatra might generate some much-needed

positive energy in that sad region.
