Guest guest
This festival is dedicated to Ananata, the serpent who coils around Lord Vishnu. Offerings are made in temples with snake idols. Snake charmers go from house to house with dormant cobras ensconded in cane baskets, asking for alms and clothing. Women offer milk and cooked rice to the snakes. Clay snakes are brought home to be worshipped by day and immeresed in the sea by evening. In Maharashtra, this festival heralds the arrival of Ganesha, almost exactly one month later. Snakes are believed to have the power over the monsoons and keep evil from homes. But i would like to know more about it!..... OM SHAKTHI
Guest guest
Nagara Panchami in Karnataka is also worshipped as a festival for snakes. On that say, a lot of prayers are made for the naga devathe and then people will go to a snake mound(?), home of the snakes and then pour the milk and leave fruits and flowers there. Some people who eat meat and eggs carry eggs and put it inside, but in a seperate mound where such thngs are allowed. Usually, snakes are also associated with Subramanya and generally in a subramanya temple, you will find such mounds. People will alspo do aarathis and some carry back the mud from the mounds. Then, all the ladies will wait for their brothers to visit them. Once they visit, the brothers are made to sit down and then a little milk is poured on their back, this milk is teh prasad from the puja and a little mud is rubbed on the wet skin of the brother. The idea is that the sisters pray to Nagaraja to keep their brothers cool, and with abundence and with peace of mind like the cold milk, and the mud from the mound asking Nagaraja to protect their brothers from all harm and providing complete protection. After this little ritual, the sisters give brothers a large donation of cash and other valuables that they would like togive as gifts. This is followed by a stumptous lunch. Brothers are generally expected to travel to their sister's place and if a brother has more than one sister and has to travel to their places they complete the trip I think in about 15 days for all of them. Hope I have explained with clarity . In case of any doubts please do ask and if its a more private email or a private clarification, please feel free to email me. - Seshadri. , "mr_taboosingh <mr_taboosingh>" <mr_taboosingh> wrote: > This festival is dedicated to Ananata, the serpent who coils around > Lord Vishnu.
