Guest guest
All "legitimate" forms of the Goddess are Holograms of the Totality, Brahman, thus any of them may be appropriate and worshipable as "the highest", not one above the other, but mutually inclusive...although there are various viewpoints, orientations, as in the metaphor of 3 blind men touching the elephant. There's only one elephant. In the most universal sense, any part of the Whole is also a hologram of the Totality, e.g.; using Blake's expression. "the universe in a grain of sand....."; However, one would not ordinarily worship a grain of sand as being an embodiment of Brahman, although it's possible. The real question then, is the value of such Devi worship, regardless of which One is Chosen, not the academic question of "higher". All of Them are equally as high and as sourceful as the others. All are the Source . That's my opinion.
Guest guest
Thank you for that post, Purushaz. You've made a most important point in a vivid and original metaphor, and -- for me at least -- it seems like the Truth. You write, regarding the ishtadevi, The real question then, is the value of such Devi worship, regardless of which One is Chosen, not the academic question of "higher". All of Them are equally as high and as sourceful as the others. All are the Source." That reminds me of the Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak quote we usually display on the front page here: "When activated, each goddess is the Great Goddess," or MahaDevi. I think of each and every goddess and god form as a facet of the infinite gemstone that is Her totality. If you allow any one facet to draw you in and teach you and fill you, it will eventually reveal more and more of that totality. So who is MahaDevi? If you are a Shakta, I think MahaDevi is a synonym for Brahman.
