Guest guest
Namaste kindred Friends, Would anyone here please tell me about Little India in Singapore? I'm planning to visit the tiny island nation next month. Any suggestions about which temples to visit? Any shops there selling rudraksha and malas that you would recommend? Also I'm trying to track down something known as "black coral mala" or "black agate mala". Has anyone seen these form of malas? All information and suggestions highly appreciated, thank you. Guest guest
Greetings to you AumGanesh Would anyone here please tell me about Little India in Singapore? I am from Singapore. Born and bred there but currently staying in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I do go back to Singapore monthly for family visits and such. About Little India. One of my favorite places. I am sure you can get a lot of information about Little India in the net, but just let me give you brief information. You should not have any problem getting there. The transport service is rather reliable. You can get there via the public bus, taxi or you can take the MRT (Mass Rapid Transport Train) stop at Orchard Road and walk along Serangoon Road (that is where little India situated), that if you like to walk. You will pass rows of shops selling Indian stuffs like saris etc. You can get fantastic Indian food (vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian. South and Northern Indian) as well as other local dishes (Malay and Chinese): either at the hawker center called Tekka Market. Previously this place was called Zhujiao Food center. In most of the traveler's brochures they still used this mandarin name. It was initially Tekka market, then the govt decided to go all Mandarin and changed it to Zhujiao, and then they change it back to Tekka. You can get reasonable and variety of food, fruits, cloths etc at this Market. Any suggestions about which temples to visit? Well along Serangoon Road itself there are about 4 Hindu temples, a mosque and a Chinese temple. The Hindu Temples situated along the main road. You will never miss it that is why I recommended that you walk and explore the area. You can get good bargain. Any shops there selling rudraksha and malas that you would recommend? Yes there are shops selling rudraksha and malas. The first place you might want to stop is the Indian Arcade and there's a shop called: Jothi Flower Shop which is situated opposite of the Indian Arcade. Another point, Singaporean speaks English. I had an interesting encounter once with a young traveler. It was after my night duty walking back home when I stumble into a young Caucasian traveler. He look so lost, with his back pack, maps and his little English- Mandarin dictionary. So being a responsible citizen I approached him and ask :" ..you look lost, do you need any help?" He looked at me in amazement and remarked ".. you speak English !!!!!!!" Why not email me and tell me when are you coming down to Singapore. I can give you more information or maybe get some friends to help you should you need any.
Guest guest
Namaste Noraji, Pranaams to you. Thank you so much for your kindly and most helpful response! I'm real chuffed! Its wonderful to hear you are from Singapore though you work in K.L. Much appreciate your information; it is much better than what I can find on the web. I feel more confident hearing it 'firsthand'. I'll be sure to try the MRT; thanks for telling what the letters stand for. The last time I was there 18 years ago, MRT did not exist, neither did Zhujiao Food Center. Tekka Market sure sounds great! Is the old "Newton Circle" still there? Will definitely take your advice and walk around Serangoon Road. Looking forward to checking out all the places you've mentioned, especially the Indian Arcade and Jyothi Flower Shop. And Indian food! Saliva is dripping..... South Indian curries for me. I get a lot of Northern Indian food in Australia but haven't tasted real hot curries for a long time; the type that sends one into bliss with practising anything. Missed too, all the local stuff like lontong, mee siam, roti prata, nasi lemak, nasi biryani, durians, rambutans, mangosteens, chendol, etc. It is utmost kind of you to assist the Caucasian traveller. I'm sure he would have felt very blessed when you spoke to him! Just like I'm feeling blessed right now. Bless your heart for saying that I may email you with details of my visit and you would give more info plus ask some of your friends to assist if I need it. You are indeed very generous in spirit, Nora. Bless you a million-fold. Soon as I get the ticket confirmed, shall get in touch with you. Once again, thank you - its from the heart. Should you ever visit Sydney where I'm currently located, please yell out! Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Swaha, AumGanesh > > I am from Singapore.
