Guest guest
My dearest friends and Siblings, I was distressed and angered to read the news a few moments ago. I am sure that you are all aware of the complete breakdown in civil authority in Iraq. People have been looting and vandalizing homes, businesses, palaces, and many other places all over the country. This has been going on for several days, ever since the American military entered Baghdad. This is unfortunate enough. What is new now is that looters have entered the National Antiquities Museum and stolen or destroyed many thousands of priceless artifacts thousands of years old. The land of Mesopotamia, now called Iraq, was the first place anywhere on Earth to invent writing. It is also probably the home of the first agriculture, the first towns, and the first state-level governments. The name "Inanna" is the oldest name for the Divine that we have from anywhere on the planet. Hence the archaeological remains from that era are priceless and irreplaceable parts of human history, valuable not only to the people of Iraq but to everyone in the world. Clay tablets from ancient Sumer are worth more than all the jewels in the Tower of London, more than all the jade in China, more than all the money in every bank account in Switzerland. The blame for this destruction lies not with the people of Iraq. They apparently view the museum as part of Saddam's government, hence a legitimate target for venting their anger and frustration. The blame in my opinion lies entirely with the military of the United States. International law very clearly says that a conquering army is responsible for making sure that the needs of the civilians in the area that it occupies are met. This includes not only food, water, medicine, and electicity, but also law enforcement. The US leaders should have provided military police immediately so that chaos would not result in such destruction. I pray that the Great Mother may bring wisdom and love to the hearts of all those involved in this tragedy. Jai Ma!
