of four faces, dressed in white, riding a hamsa, weilding holy-water

vessel with kusha-grass asperger. Heals skin. Removes kama (lust).

 

Maheshvari (Brow chakra) - North-east. Power of Maheshvara (Shiva the

Destroyer). Three-eyed Goddess bearing trident, tigerskin skirt, topknot

of hair, riding the bull. Heals the blood. Removes krodha (anger).

 

Kaumari (Throat chakra) - East. Power of Kumara (Skanda). Teenaged

Goddess, bearing spear, riding a peacock. Heals muscles. Removes lobha

(greed).

 

Vaishnavi (Heart chakra) - South-east. Power of Vishnu the Preserver.

Blue-skinned Goddess bearing discus, conch, mace and lotus, riding the

eagle. Heals fat. Removes moha (delusion).

 

Varahi (Navel chakra) - South. Power of Varaha (Boar). Sow-headed

Goddess, tusked, riding a water-buffalo. Heals bone. Removes mada

(pride).

 

Aindri (Womb chakra) - South-west. Power of Indra. Queen of the Gods,

bearing a vajra (lightning bolt), spangled with eyes, riding an elephant.

Heals the marrow. Removes matsarya (envy).

 

Chamunda (Root chakra) - West. Crone aspect of Kali. Emaciated black

Goddess, always hungry, lolling tongue, large teeth, skull ornaments,

carries a noose, rides a preta (ghost). Heals reproductive fluid.

Removes papa (sin).

 

Mahalakshmi (no chakra) - North-west. Aspect of Durga. Many-armed

warrior Goddess, source of power and wealth, rides tiger or lion. Heals

the vitality. Prevents loss of punya (merit).
