Meaning:

One Who taught the knowledge of arts without learning,

One Who saves from getting to the cruel hell,

In various forms One Who stands far and near

as the hold for the worshipper,

Fire-dancer Who burnt the impurities (forts) with a

bow,

Lord shivalOka of thiruppunkUr,

One in sturdy balcony houses surrounding thirun^IDUr,

Him, how did I - the mean fellow - not think of !

 

Notes:

1. A very inspiring song in many occasions.

2. "Taught without learning" could be interpreted as

"God never learnt, but taught me" or as "God taught

me (blessed me with) things without having to learn".

In the first case it indicates the "by nature all

knowing quality" of God. (sarvaGYatvam). In the second

it is the great and astounding grace that elevates one

to high skill level without conventional learning.
