Guest guest
My dearest friends and Siblings, I wish to share a sad news item. This is from a town called New Bedford, in the US state called Massachusetts. I have visited this place. It is a charming town on the Atlantic coast, with many small fishing boats and pretty green parks. Many of the people are immigrants from Portugal. Recently, three men attacked a man who was trying to deliver pizza. They beat him so badly that he needed to go to the hospital. Why did they attack? They thought that he was a Moslem. He was in fact a Hindu. Massachusetts is the state where the American Revolution started in 1775. This is when America stopped being a British colony and became an independent country. The people in Massachusetts are very proud of this, telling to everyone that this is where American liberty and American freedom began. It is a pity that after 228 years of bragging about freedom and telling everyone how wonderful freedom is, some people in the very same state where American independence began still do not understand the meaning of the word. The three men are now in jail. They are charged with a hate crime. Attacking a pizza deliverer for money or some other reason would be a state crime with a minor prison sentence. A racist hate crime is a federal crime with more serious consequences. I wish that there were some other way to deal with such situations, educating people rather than putting them in jail. But either way, such actions cannot be tolerated by any civilized society. Guest guest
Namaste, Usha Devi ... This is a shame. New Bedford is about a half-hour drive from my home. It is a nice place in its own way. It is where the novel "Moby Dick" begins, where Ishmael meets the towering Polynesian harpooner Queequeg, while sharing a bed in a seedy, overbooked inn. Along with nearby Nantucket Island, New Bedford was once the center of the U.S. whaling industry. But where Nantucket has since evolved into an elite, upscale tourist resort, New Bedford remains a tough, gritty, working port -- now fallen onto hard times. It's a plain, blue-collar town with a lousy economy, a depleted fishery and a (rather well- deserved) reputation for violence -- murder, rape, armed robbery, domestic violence, and -- yes -- hate crimes. Shortly after 9/11/01, a Sikh convenience-store clerk was attacked as a Muslim in that part of Massachusetts. Quoth Schiller, "Against stupidity, even the gods contend in vain." Guest guest
Dear all: It is sad indeed. The reason indeed is the illinformed and not willing to be informed man on the street in US. The reason can probably be traced to illiteracy in US. I am led to believe so in the light of the following article by an eminent Indian. http://www.shashitharoor.com/articles/newsweek/illiterate.html I have also read that many americans believed that Saddam Hussain had something to do with 9/11 and hence supported Bush. Is it mere illiteracy or concerted media propaganda by captive media. I dunno. Anyway i feel the average american in the street needs a lot of education on the world outside US. As long asd that is lacking these things will happen. Kochu Devi Bhakta <devi_bhakta wrote: Namaste, Usha Devi ... This is a shame. New Bedford is about a half-hour drive from my home. Guest guest
I use a car service in the Bronx to take me home from my father's apartment, and they seem to hire a good number of Sikh drivers. Since 9/11, I have noted drivers with the Sikh religious symbol dangling from their rear-view mirror, and a bangle bracelet peeping out from their right shirt cuff. But the turbans are gone, the long hair is now barbered short, no more beards and moustaches, and certainly no <tilak> painted on their forehead. It's sad. -- Len/ Kalipadma On Sat, 28 Jun 2003 21:01:30 -0700 (PDT) sankara menon <kochu1tz writes: > Dear all: > > It is sad indeed. Guest guest
Namaste, Here is an editorial from a paper local to that area that speaks to the links between this and other violence there. Also it speaks to what we address stridently, and what we choose to ignore. http://www.southcoasttoday.com/daily/06-03/06-29-03/b02op054.htm Blessings, prainbow , Sister Usha Devi <sisterusha> wrote: > My dearest friends and Siblings, > I wish to share a sad news item.
