The name of Susheela Raman -- a young, British-born Tamil singer

whose jazz-blues-pop songs are informed by classical Indian

influences -- has come up on this list several times in the past. Her

debut album, "Salt Rain," contained arresting new arrangements of

several age-old Shakta hymns that caught the attention of many of our

memebers.

Well, last Tuesday, she released the follow-up, which contains still

more Shakta music along with a number of original compositions. It's

good. For those of you who may be interested, here are further

details:

LOVE TRAP

Susheela Raman

2003 Narada World Release

This sensuous new album follows up U.K. vocalist Susheela Raman's

critically acclaimed 2001 debut. SALT RAIN is the album that made her

a European sensation with a Mercury Prize nomination, BBC3 Awards for

World Music win (Best Newcomer) and certified Gold sales in France.

Backed by an astonishing band that's a veritable who's who of world

music - and covering songs by Joan Armatrading and Ethiopian legend

Mahmoud Ahmed alongside ones based in the Tamil tradition - Susheela

fine tunes her unique brand of sultry, evocative East/West fusion

that has dazzled her audiences around the world.

Susheela Raman comments:

"LOVE TRAP is one step further along the path that stems from the

encounter of Indian and Western music I grew up with as the daughter

of Tamil emigrants living in Britain and Australia.

I describe this album as 'more beauty and more beast'; an altogether

more concentrated distillation of South Indian classical music, North

Indian folk and pop melodies, rock, funk, drum 'n' bass, and all the

musical inspirations of the musicians playing with me.

We all have our own journeys to make, but the pathways of the

musicians and the sounds on LOVE TRAP cross here in a way that is

very real for me and, I hope, for you."
