But today is an auspicious Pournami because it is also known as vyasa Paurnami, the day of Vyasa the great guru. (http://www.freeindia.org/biographies/sages/vedavyasa/ ) to read more on Sage Vyasa. This is the day you honor Guru and all the guru parampara and it only comes once a year. Most people too get initiated during Guru Pournami.
