Hello all. I am an old member but I've been all this time. I've gone

through the archives & found it interesting how people specualte

about Aryans in India. From what I learned from my family, Aryans

migrated from eastern Iran thousands of years ago & intermixed with

the Dravidians (people of South India, Tamils, Keralites, Malayalam,

ect). Thats pretty much the textbook version but that still doesn't

explain the true diversity of India. It's more than the

Aryan/Dravidian divide because that theory doesn't take into account

the Pathans, Parsis, Punjabi, and Sindh people.

 

There is this misconception in the west that all Hindus are

vegetarian, peace loving people that chant bhajans all day long.

Thats simply not true. India & Indians are like everybody else in

this world. There are charlatans, rip-off artists & perverts in

India...lots in fact. Spiritual? A few yes but not all. I was born

into a Hindu Brahmin family from Ludhiana (near Punjab) and came to

the USA when I was 5. I've been to India 5 times since then but the

most memorable was in 1993 when the Hindu/Muslim riots happened. A

lot of people in here are probably quick to put down the Muslims as

troublemakers but let me tell you...there is a growing disease in

India & its called Hindu Fundamentalism. Groups like the Shiv Sena,

Ram Sevaks, ect. are responsible for a lot of the trouble & chaos

thats going on in India right now. Contrary to popular belief,

Hinduism DOES have an evil side. I remember on Valentine's Day in

Delhi, the Ram Sevaks started vandalizing & beating up shopkeepers &

customers alike. No one was spared. They would hit children, women,

ect., all because they thought that Valentine's Day was a Christian

ploy to bring evil into India. The Hindu Right Wing groups are very

powrrful in India. They are responsible for instilling the caste

system (even though it was outlawed by Ghandiji) & subjecting

millions of Dalits (low caste people. Dalit is a PC term for the

Shudra people).

 

The reality is India will always have its problems. Female

infanticide (girls are useless in Indian society unless you're

competing for Miss India), extreme poverty, computer engineers with

huge handlebar moustaches & afro chest hairs. No one religion or

person is perfect. Hinduism as it is now in Indian society is facist

to the extreme. If Islam has its terrorists, then Hindusim has it's

bloodthirsty Ram Sevaks. Indian Hindus in general go to mandir

(temple) out of obligation depending on what tradition they follow.

In truth, more Indians can be found watching the latest Hrithik

Roshan film than in a temple or masjid. In fact, more white folks

like you guys know more about obscure stuff like the Devi Purana &

such then most Indians do. Look at the (Hatha) Yoga craze. You would

think Indian housewives would be going to Yoga classes rather than

languishing at home in embroidered saris watching Ekta Kapoor soap

operas while their Dalit maid massage ther feet. I'm gulity of being

a Bollywood freak & I love it. I'd rather go to a desi concert than

watch some old decrepid sadhu w/ bad breath talk about the "secrets

of life". But overall, I'm glad this place exists. The information &

knowledge in this group is enough to put my family to shame.
