Guest guest
Dear friends, Mantras - Better to Listen or Chant ,Agreed ears never get tired like others instruments like mouth or eyes. I am a bit confused. pls correct me. first say a chanting.usually this is veda parayana,or sloka parayana or say parayana of ramayana, devi mahatmya, bhagvatam, narayaneeyam etc or say something like saharnama archana etc. This requires a bit of mastery of the subject not possible for all so we usually chant this or this listen to this. but when u say a mantra this is usually given to us by our guru with a advise of saying the same. this we usually say this loudly,do a mananam or upamsu (without movement of lips) so all upadesa mantras should always be said as advised by our guru. I also feel mantras a full of beeja asksharas this inturn do create a sort of vibration in the person of the sayer of the mantras, hence this should be said. Incase u want to transfer the power of the chanting to someone else this is usually achieved by doing a sankalpa and a homa with said mantra or chanting with (a vessel containing water of the ganges) kumba or doing a yantra pratistapana with mantra and the user wearing the yantra. These are the methods i have heard .but the desired effect does not come by simply listening to a dvd/cd/tape of a mantra. May be this can be a nice timepass. pls send in your comments pls with warm regards shankar
Guest guest
Dear Respected Shankar: Subject matter "Badram karnebhis srunuyama devaha" it self tell us the the significance of this mantra, because if you can not hear it properly then you will never understand the meaning of that mantra. Therefore it is invoked as a "shanti mantra". There is famous shloka that tell us that if we make a mistake in the pronouncation of a vowel than it changes the meaning, however if you happen to change the dhatu (root verb) that the mantra itself becomes the cause of destruction of the person who recites it. The shloka is as follows: anaxaram hataaya shyama visvara.m vyaadhi piiDitam . axataa shastra ruupena vajrama patati mastake .. I urge the devotees and aspirants to recite the mantra with understanding. That has been the advice from our ancestors. They created these mantras and established the procedures. It is unfortunate that we do not wish to follow it as advised. It is very similar to taking prescription drugs and totally ignoring the established guidelines from the drug manufacturers. One can use knife to cut the cloth to stitch clothe but the results are far better if you use scissors rather than a knife. Finally, it is your practice and your life and I wish you well in your practices. Regards, Dr. Yadu
