Guest guest Posted August 25, 2003 Report Share Posted August 25, 2003 41 Killed, 120 Injured in Mumbai Bomb Blasts Mumbai, Aug 25 (UNI) At least 43 people were killed and more than 120 others injured in two bomb blasts this afternoon in Mumbai's busy business centre at Mumba Devi and at the historic Gateway of India, police said. The explosions took place in the parking lot near the Gateway of India, facing the Taj Intercontinental Hotel, and at Tamba Kanta area in Mumba Devi, which houses several important markets. Both the bombs were said to be kept in cars. The magnitude of the blasts was such that it could be heard a few kilometers away. Mangled bodies were strewn at the sites of the explosions. The blasts led to panic and people were seen running helter skelter. Later, many people working in Mumbai's Nariman Point District left their offices for home. A red alert has been sounded in Maharashtra following the blasts. Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal held a meeting of top officials to review the situation. The blast at Mumba Devi occured shortly before noon when the area was bustling with activity. Asia's largest wholesale cloth markets -- Mulji Jetha and Mangaldas are located here besides the "Dava" bazaar. Mumba Devi area also has the biggest scrap and metal markets besides retail market for aluminium, copper, brass, steel utensils.
