Guest guest
I am a Wiccan High Priest, as well as a practicing Shakta. I have lectured about both practices at New Age and Pagan gatherings, under my "nom de plume" of Black Lotus. While some Hindu deities (especially Ganesh!) can work in a Wiccan context, I generally keep the practices separate. A kavacham is usually a list of deity names, and each name is invoked to protect a part of the body, a personal possession, or a spacial direction. This last example is superficially similar to invoking the Guardians of the Quarters. The effectiveness of a mantra is dependant upon the sounds of Sanskrit being properly intoned. One can chant a mantra without knowing its meaning, and the Sanskrit sounds will still have the appropriate effect. Stotrams can be translated and recited as poetry, and dhyanams (meditation images) can be translated to help in visualization, but a mantra is much more than its literal meaning. The magic is in the sound vibrations. I have heard Wicca described as "Western tantra," and certainly Gerald Gardner was familiar with Hindu magickal techniques. Anyone else on this List exploring Wicca as well as Shaktism? -- Len/ Kalipadma On Fri, 29 Aug 2003 19:46:47 +0530 (India Standard Time) "hyacinth" <gaychaos writes: > hi all > > has anybody here have heard of chandi kavacham?and how it is similar > to > wiccan shielding and banishing rituals?how these two may be > combined? > also i wanted to ask another question that is if effectiveness of > strotras/mantras is reduced if they r translated?i have this problem > quite a > much as i try to combine wicca and shakta worship > > blessed be > hail mother > > hyacinth > ______________ The best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
