Guest guest
This puja makes the assumption that one already has an altar with a murti/image of the Mother already established. In other words, ghat and yantra puja, as well as prana pratishtha are temporarily omitted. Itrans transliteration to begin with puja itself. Articles needed for puja: The puja vessels. (Some of these can be omitted. The use of the various puja vessels is not standard throughout India.) a copper bowl (offerings are placed inside) a kosha-kushi ( a particular kind of large copper spoon used for puja is a kosha; the kushi is an identical spoon of a smaller size that fits inside it. I believe kalimandir.org sells them and may have a picture on their website. Look in the giftshop section.) a plate for incense and an incense burner a candle or ghee lamp a plate or small tray for the various leaves, grasses and other offerings a tray for flowers a conch shell and its kurma/tortoise holder (again, see kalimandir.org for photo) a bell a cloth, preferably red, small like a handkerchief, for waving 2 small cup/bowls to hold red and white sandalpaste a bowl to catch water used for washing the hands if you don't want water to get all over the floor an asana-meditation rug a kamandalu or some kind of substitute pitcher for pouring water other assorted small bowls and dishes Notes: One of the interesting things about puja is that there is a substitute for everything. Traditionally the puja vessels are either copper or brass. Why copper? In part, it is because of the color, but maybe someone else on this list knows other reasons. For Kali Puja, my ashram uses a copper conch instead of a shell. (And a silver one for Shiva Ratri) Symbology of kosha kushi- round spoon with long neck has very female image, resembling womb and birth canal. ( A friend of mine accidentally discovered that some Hindus ABHOR the use of kosha kushi when she innocently tried to find one online) Can someone add comments re kosha kushi symbology? Also, can someone comment on symbology of kurma and conch? Jai Ma, Gitaprana

Guest guest
Namaste Madan Mohan- Yes, finding a guru is a problem. I will write enough instruction that the puja can be done without one, but there is always the question whether the mantras are effective without a guru. Re:English-not to worry at all! When I sit down to write I realize I also cannot speak English very well and I am a native speaker in a country that, theoretically, speaks English! What can you do with a language where the words cough, though, through and tough are all pronounced differently?! And the plural of "house" is "houses", but the plural of "mouse" is not "mouses" ?? Easier to learn Sanskrit,I think. At least it follows rules. Jai Ma, Gitaprana
