Mahalaya

Today is Mahalaya or the end of Pitri Paksha and the begining of Devi

paksha.Thats what it signifies.This brings in the season of religious

festivals in Bengal.It is believed that Ma Durga begins her journey

from her husband's home in Kailash to her paternal home on earth.The

journey takes seven days,for Durga Puja in Bengal starts on the

seventh day from Mahalaya.

"tarpan" which is offering of water to the departed souls and other

important rituals take place today starting at daybreak.

As I write this I am listening to the chandipath on the CD that I had

bought during my recent trip back home.

 

May Ma Durga shower her blessings on everyone.
