MYSORE, Sept 27, 2003 - The nine-day Dasara [Navratri] festivities

got off to a colourful start this morning with a Chamundeshwari puja

atop the Chamundi hills here. Noted scientist C N R Rao inaugurated

the festival by lighting the traditional lamp before the

Utsavamurthi of Goddess Chamundeshwari placed in a decorated silver

chariot in front of the temple at 10:42 am.

Addressing the gathering, Prof Rao said Dasara was one of the

biggest festivals of the country and Mysore's Dasara was world

famous because of its grandeur. "Being a Mysorean, it gives me

immense pleasure to inaugurate the festivities," he said.

DASARA EVENTS: A series of events were launched on the occasion.
