keep space for peace

by Phoebe Knopf

peace,

peace in the generous blue flower of space,

peace in our hearts, peace in the clean autumn wind,

peace even woven among our uncertainties,

ourwild griefs, our rage,

peace sometimes gentle, velvet-footed, always

salutory, just touching

on our despair, only to heal,

peace in the deep earth, lightening, prophets, and

stars,

peace among the animals - the field mice glad now of

new seeds,

the deer, the otters, and the whales,

the striped cat in the fourth floor apartment window

above me,

peace in the little gold leaves dancing in the traffic

on boylston street,

peace in the bent old man waiting by the crosswalk,

peace in the eager faces of girls laughing on the

library steps,

peace in the victory garden - there - among the

september roses,

the clematis, the brilliant asters,

and the forget -me-nots, each tiny azure bloom a

world, unrepeatableas the life of a child,

peace in the blue and gold chalice of this day -

the heady draught of memory and resistance offerred to

those of us

for whom the knowledge of thousands of human beings,

in a span of three

septembers, turned to smoke for power or money,

becomes a perilous wound that can only begin to be

healed

by persistent, imaginative acts of love andcourage -

peace in a simple (not easy) yes,

peace in a child's leap.
