Guest guest
Namaste, During Navratri I witnessed circle dancing around a basically, three dimensional, cuboid altar - or shrine - with a conical top or 'roof'; indeed, the construction was called 'a temple', on several occasions. The shrine was referred to as 'Mataji', and had six pictures of Durga on its hexagonal middle section, a large picture of Lakshmi, above it; a large picture of Durga further down (where Prashad was placed). That makes eight. I was also told that there was a murti of Durga inside the miniature temple: making nine in all. Has anybody else witnessed conical 'Mataji' shrines or altars, over Navratri, please - or heard of similar traditions? Jai Om - m6
Guest guest
yes that is called a matajis's Madh meaning a shrine which belongs to maa, on the head of it theres also usually a garbo ( clay pot with a diva inside ) The clay pot symbolises maas womb ( garbha) and the diva is us ( maas children) we gujratis decorate that at navratri....and do garba by going round it...also we do pradisshina around it nine times. sometimes this madh is also seen spinning around clockwise...... we get a feeling that maas is playing garba with us too by doing darshan of the madh Jai mataji
