In my understanding, there is no particular mantra you're supposed to recite (japa is simply recitation) during a lunar eclipse. It is simply that the effect of whatever mantra you do recite will be magnified during this period. You mention that you're "new to this" -- I don't how new, so forgive me if I'm being too basic. But every devi (aspect of Goddess) has Her particular mantric forms; the mantras you would recite during this period would be the ones appropriate to the form that has chosen you as Her devotee. There are other times when the effects of mantra japa are magnified - - such as the Navratris; and in fact the bright half of any lunar month, from new moon to first quarter. Incidentally, a properly designed temple will also act as a cosmic "amplifier," so to speak, focusing and intensifying the effects of your devotion.
