(meypporuL nAyanAr) worshipped the form of true austerity as the truth itself, and won ! Notes: 1. muththanAthan who could not win meypporuL nAyanAr in war cunningly came as if he is a devotee of Lord shiva and when meypporuL nAyanAr bowed down worshipping that form of devotee, he stabbed the nAyanAr. If one goes through the events it may be felt appropriate to say muththanAthan won by killing nAyanAr. But cEkkizAr says, meypporuL nAyanAr won ! How ? Even if it is enemy when one comes in the glorious form of devotee, by worshipping that and for which sacrificing even the life, meypporuL nAyanAr stands extremely high in our reverence and in devotion to God. muththanAthan, whose life nAyanAr protected even after he stabbed him, would have spent all his life in guilt and shame that stands even after his death. Obviously meypporuL won. 2. In this regard one could observe how closely cEkkizAr adheres to the holy recitals of the previous saints. The words "thozuthu venRAr" maintain the glory of the original thiruththoNDaththokai verse of cundharar, "vellumA mikavalla meypporuL". (cundharar has used such apparently contradictory adjective in some other cases also. "kalaimalin^tha cIr n^ambi kaNNappar", "n^ATTam migu dhaNDi". If one carefully analyses excellency of these statements could be understood.) 3. There are people who cheat in the name of religion. muththanAthan is an example of such people in sacred form but ill motive behind. Masses tend to worship such people and when they get cheated blame the whole of religious community. One can see a very clear contrast in the life of this great one. If one tries to adore people for what good things they have rather than blindly imagining victimizing themselves, there would be no need for blaming. meypporuL nAyanArs reverence is for the holy form in which muththanAthan had come, rather than on any wrong assumption. So he did not blame when the enemy performed his real cruelty, rather even in that stage he saved muththanAthans life because he was still on the holy form he really adored. Definitely he won - all our hearts ! 4. How deeply involved was cEkkizAr in the life of nAyanmArs could be felt from this song. His heart felt very pained to say muththanAthan killed meypporuL nAyanAr. Still he needs to say that somehow. He heart quivering he has said, "muththanAthan did what he intended to do" 5. kavaLikai - bundle (of palm leaves); ap paricu - that way. ===== --\ ----------- Name of hara encompass !
