yoga for women by swami muktananda published by

yoga publications trust ,munger,bihar,india

In vedic times mariage and spirituality went hand in hand .in those

days rishis were grihastaas, householders and the names of vasistha &

arundhati, atri &anusooya, yagyavalkya and maitreyi have for ages

represented both the highest married joy and fidelity ,and the

highest spiritual attainments.yet these days wedded bliss seems to

more of a hope than a fact for many women, inner stagnation rather

than inner unfoldment

according to tantra ,the interaction between man and woman may have

one of the three purpose -procreation,pleasure or

samadhi.householder sadhakas experience this relationship without any

inhibitions ,conflicts or guilt as a part of her sadhana for

samadhi.ingeneral the climax of this experiences is lost before one

is able to deepen it,but for spiritual purposes the climax must be

prolonged so that the dormant ,silent centres of conciousness are

exploded.

maithuna then is not merely phyisical union ,but union, but union with

a veiw to samadhi, the purpose is clear - awakening of sushumna

the practise of maithuna requires strict preparation by both

partners.certain hatha yoga practises must be perfected .through

paschimottasana,shalabasana,vajrasana,supta vajrasan, and siddha yoni

asana.shirshasana is important in regulating the reproductive

hormones and harmonizing influxes to the brain.moola bandha ,uddiyana

bandha, shambhavi mudra ,sahjoli mudra and kumbhaka must also become

so spontaneous that there is no difficulty in using techniques at the

height of maithuna.

on the emotional level ,both husband and wife must be purified of

dependency and possessiveness .they must also have transcended the

usual stereo typed masculine and feminine behaviour, to the point

where both area able to acheive fulfilment.by whole hearted

acceptance of the role of woma as a guru.

it is at the initiative of the woman ,and under her guidance that

maithuna takes place .she performs all the preliminaries and marks

her husbands forehead telling him where to meditate .in ordinary

relationships the man takes the aggressive role and woman submits.but

in maithuna ,the woman takes the lead and man becomes her medium.A

wife must be able to arouse her husband to help him maintain his

bindu.if her husband loses control ,it is because the woman has not

conducted the ritual correctly.

in tantra it is said that shiva is merely a shava ,a corpse without

shakti.shakti is the priestess.at the birth of the cosmos "shakti is

the creator shiva is the witnes" so in tantra woman has the status

of the guru and the man of the disciple.the tantric tradition is

actually passed on from the woman to man where it is the woman who

initiates

in hatha yoga pradeepika it is said "that woman who is able to keep

her rajas above the means of retention of the orgasm is the real

yogini..... .the practice of vajroli gives siddhi to the body - it

becomes handsome ,smooth, bright and attractive .this is the divine

practice of yoga that gives liberation through enjoyment.
