Guest guest
OM Nora The nasal passages can be opened by using Jala Neti and Sutra Neti. In addition, the attitude and technique with which the pranayama is practised is very important. Keep the mind elevated and not mechanical. Repeat the Mantra with devotion. Make the inhale and exhale subtle. Think of inhaling prana instead of air. Think of exhaling impurities and tension instead of waste gases. Locate the breath in the abdoment instead of the chest. If you can, take the inhale down to the base of spine and bring the exhale up from the base of the spine. Feel the result of each inhale and exhale. During retention, stay calm and keep the body, especially the chest, relaxed. And practice, practice, practice. Om Namah Sivaya Omprem , "N. Guest guest
Nora, some excellant advice by Ompremji. Bear also in mind that one nostril will always be stuck(should allow some air passage though) relative to the other(has a relation to the half brain that is dominating at the time); the cycle of blockage changes every 2-3 hours. The exact science of studying the cycle of breath in each nostril is called Swara yoga and there is an excellant book published by the Bihar School of Yoga(titled Swara Yoga). If this sadhak is also finding that one particular nostril is stuck, and it is stuck most of the time, then usually it indicates some problem. Breathing through the mouth for this particular pranayama(nadi sodhana) is prohibited; there are other pranayamas that can be done through the mouth eg - Sitali Sitkari(good resource is Science of Pranayama at www.dlshq.org) -yogaman , "omprem" <omprem> wrote: > OM Nora > > The nasal passages can be opened by using Jala Neti and > Sutra Neti. > > In addition, the attitude and technique with which the pranayama > is practised is very important. Guest guest
OM Yogaman Your statement, "that one nostril will always be stuck(should allow some air passage though) relative to the other...; the cycle of blockage changes every 2-3 hours", is correct under normal circumstances. But,as i'm sure you know, alternate nostril breathing, in all its many forms, is intended to interrupt that cycle. For others who may not be aware of the details of the above, an explanation follows: Normally, one nostril is dominant for 2 hours or so at which time the other nostril becomes dominant for the next 2 hours. This cycle continues day after day, year after year unless changed by some of the practices that constitute our sadhana. When the right nostril is dominant, the prana vayu of the pingala nadi is ascendent and is speeding up the processes of the body and the mind. When the left nostril is dominant, the apana vayu of the ida nadi is ascendent and is slowing down the processes of the body and mind. The prana vayu is also known as ha (sun), while the apana vayu is known as tha (moon). After performing alternate nostril breathing, it will be noticed that the air flows equally through both nostrils, indicating a merge of ha and tha, in other words, hatha yoga has occurred. Prana vayu is rajasic, apana vayu is tamasic, the union of prana and apana (hatha yoga) is sattvic and is the result of kundalini forming.
