I'm glad you like the picture, and thanks for sharing your

reactions. If you'd like, I can make and send you a high-res scan so

you can generate a good sized print from it. Contact me off board if

What a great image! I always wanted an image of the Tri-Shakti, with

Kali instead of Parvati. And of course, I'd prefer my deities with

colored complexions: Kali as blue, Lakshmi as red, and Sarasvati as

white.

I recall Devi Bhakta wrote about when Hindu devotional posters started

portraying most of the deities with European complexions. There was an

English-language book published on the topic in India -- what was the

title and author, and is there some way we Westerners can purchase the

book?

Hi Kalipadma:

A somewhat late reply to your recent query: "There was an English-

language book published on the topic [of popular devotional art] in

India -- what was the title and author, and is there some way we

Westerners can purchase the book?"

Found it. It's called, "Popular Indian Art: Raja Ravi Varma and the

Printed Gods of India," by Erwin Neumayer and Christine Schelberger.

It's a pricey, large-format "coffee table" art published just last

year (when I posted the newspaper book review you recalled in this

group). Publisher: Oxford; ISBN: 019565872-8

Place to buy it in the West:

Amazon has it too, but for the same price. So if you decide to buy

it, support small business and buy it from IndiaClub. I know the

owners personally. A young husband-and-wife team: Nice, honest

people and reliable.
