Guest guest
Well, Bollywood borrowing is not a problem here. This amazing painting comes from the personal collection of our co- moderator, Kochu. He notes, "This is no ordinary painting. I created her with a purpose. You know, the painter had problems and he says the day he finished it, the problems vanished. The artist is his 30's. His father is an upasaka, in his 70's. The father directs the son [on the technical accuracy of the portrayal]." The image is not a sharp as I'd like it to be, but Kochu is trying from long distance to coax a photographer into obtaining a clearer, higher-quality image. Guest guest
I clicked on the link below, and got the Varahi Devi page of the Website. Is the picture displayed Kochu's painting? I've seen this image before, in an art book of Indian paintings collected by Pratyapaditya Pal (a curator of the Los Angeles Museum). Kochu, could you tell me (offlist if you prefer) how you found the artist, and what he charges for a painting? I can see myself saving up to purchase something to hang over my altar in New York. I am fascinated by Varahi, partly because she rules the <dhatu> of the bones (and I have arthritis!). Also because she in many ways parallels the Celtic goddess Ceridwen, who becomes a white sow (female boar) that devours her own children. My question: Varahi is portrayed as riding a tiger. Is this iconographically correct? She seems to be taking on an aspect of Durga (except Satish says Durga shouldn't be shown on a tiger...). All the sources I've read say Varahi's vehicle is the waterbuffalo. I think this may come from the fact that Varahi as a Matrika is usually invoked in the South. Lord Yama as a Dikpala is also invoked in the South, and his vehicle is the waterbuffalo. Interestingly, the MahaVidya Bagalamukhi is ALSO invoked in the South, which may explain why some sources confuse Bagalamukhi and Varahi. Here follows a list of Matrikas (Little Mothers), Dikpalas (Sky Guardians) and their vehicles, and MahaVidyas (Wisdom Goddesses) as they are attributed to the directions... East -- Kaumari... Indra (elephant)... Chinnamastika... South-East -- Vaishnavi... Agni (ram)... Dhumavati... South -- Varahi... Yama (waterbuffalo)... Bagalamukhi... South-West -- Aindri... Nirriti (corpse)... Kamala... West -- Chamunda... Varuna (crocodile)... Bhuvanishvari... North-West -- MahaLakshmi... Vayu (deer)... Matangi... North -- Brahmani... Kubera (human)... Tara... North-East -- Maheshvari... Ishana (bull)... Shodasi... Zenith -- [no Matrika] Brahma (swan)... Kali... Nadir -- [no Matrika] Vishnu (serpent)... Bhairavi... -- Len/ Kalipadma On Wed, 03 Mar 2004 18:58:41 -0000 "Devi Bhakta" <devi_bhakta writes: > Well, Bollywood borrowing is not a problem here. > > This amazing painting comes from the personal collection of our co- > moderator, Kochu. Too vague a parallel. Varahi protects Her children/votaries. > East -- Kaumari... Indra (elephant)... Chinnamastika... > South-East -- Vaishnavi... Agni (ram)... Dhumavati... > South -- Varahi... One can read them once and leave it without paying too much attention, unless their sadhana prescribed by their guru requires this specific knowledge. Varahi's vehicle is better based on Her dhyana. That dhyana which the guru prescribes(by means of dhyana shloka). Rgds
Guest guest
The link lead you to our Varahi Page and the paintings is from Exotic India Art. I think the painting has been sold off. I cant find it anymore in Exotic India Art gallery. They have fantastic collections of paintings. I have bought several from them. http://www.exoticindia.com/paintings/Hindu/goddess/ The one that Devi Bhakta talks about is at our group main page. Shri Varahi without the saree is from Kochu private Collection. I like this one better. This picture [ from another site : line painting ] shows Shri Vahari Devi sitting on a bird. http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/gthursby/tantra/varahi.htm
Guest guest
The only thing wrong with the line drawing is that the items in the hands are all in wrong hands. There are rules on what shoyld be in which hand. Vaaraahi is shown on bird; tiger and biffallo. I chose the bird. "N. Guest guest
Does anyone what is the origin of Goddess Varahi and in which purana can one find details about her? I see that she holds a conch shell and a chakra.. and from the name, is it safe to conclude that she's maha-lakshmi's incarnation during Lord Vishnu's incarnation as Lord Varaha ? can someone please clarify this? Btw.. the picture on the front page is really beautiful .. sublime.. ciao , sankara menon <kochu1tz> wrote: > The only thing wrong with the line drawing is that the items in the hands are all in wrong hands. Guest guest
, "tangchikhay" <tangchikhay> wrote: > what is the origin of Goddess Varahi and in which purana > can one find details about her? There seem to be two types of Varahi. 1) Sapta Matrika - Varahi. 2) Dandanayika - Varahi. As sapta matrika Varahi She manifested in the Devi Saptashati from Vishnu(part of Markandeya Purana) along with Brahmi, Vaishnavi, Maheshvari, Narasimhi, Kaumari. Varahi as Dandanayika appears in Lalitopakhyana(part of Brahmanda Purana) as the commander of the Lalita's army. The pic on group home page is of this Varahi. Varahi as Dandanayika is more important to Srividya upasakas. This varahi is a creation(or even an aspect) of Lalita. When ppl talk about Varahi upasana, they usually mean the Dandanayika Varahi.Dandanayika Varahi has her own ancillary deities( anga devata, upanga devata and pratyanga devatas). The mantras also differ with the Sapta Matrika Varahi mantra incorporating some "hard to pronounce" bijakshara. >I see that she holds a conch shell > and a chakra.. and from the name, is it safe to conclude that she's > maha-lakshmi's incarnation during Lord Vishnu's incarnation as Lord > Varaha ? In one way we can say She is Maha Lakshmi's incarnation saying all goddesses are the same. In an avatara sense, She is a form of Durga/Parvati. Those who worship Lalita in the form of a 3 dimensional SriChakra using the 15 lettered mantra and other related mantras are called Srividya upasakas.
