Guest guest
One of the things that attracts me to this great group is undoubtedly the pictures on the front page. The moderator should be commended for having impeccable taste. However, on this occassion, i am quite puzzled as it is possible THE FIRST TIME that i saw the picture of a male deity on the front page. I love Lord Ganapati, don't get me wrong, but are you guys actually trying to portray Goddess Vigneswari (I don't really know the exact spelling, sorry) ? who is the female version of Lord Ganapati. ciao Tang

I dont think they intended to portray Vigneswari. It is MahaGanapati with his Shakti seated on his lap. Vigneswari, I think is one of the many Yoginis. Vigneswari doesnt share the same status and importance as Ganapati, I think. I am not sure if the above is accurate though. Guest guest
In the srividya tradition the mantras to be used are basically Bala, Mahaaganapati, panchadashi and shodashi. According to the lneage somme have additional uchishtaganapati; shoolini etc. Ganapati is male but without it even sadhana of Shakti is impossible. Shakti sadhana does not mean ignoring all male devatas. tangchikhay <tangchikhay wrote: One of the things that attracts me to this great group is undoubtedly the pictures on the front page. Guest guest
I have seen Ganapati described as an "honorary Shakti." Whereever he appears, he is deputizing for Parvati in some way. The first time I brought an offering to the Ganesha Temple in Flushing, I asked a pujari where to leave it. He gestured towards the shrine of Ganesha and said "Leave it by the Shakti." I noted aloud that I thought <Shakti> only referred to females. The pujari waggled his head (something I've only seen Indians from India do!), grinned, and said, "Yes. Well, but you know Ganesha!" (In South India, Ganesha is often seen as a "Mamma's Boy" who refuses to leave the home or get married.) -- Len/ Kalipadma On Tue, 16 Mar 2004 09:32:23 -0800 (PST) sankara menon <kochu1tz writes: > In the srividya tradition the mantras to be used are basically Bala, > Mahaaganapati, panchadashi and shodashi. Ganapati has his own shakti/consort. She is called VallabhA. Also see pic on group homepage. Another form of Ganapati popular in mantra shastra has "Hasti Pishachini" as his wife. This is popular in south India.
