Guest guest
Hi Paulie ... You wrote that the mantra website in question "reminds me of little spell books sold in occult and metaphysical stores." Satish replied, "A few mantras listed there are correct but overall this site can be thought of as something like you mentioned." I agree; the site looks strictly commercial. That's why it's important to attribute these sorts of things -- so that members can judge for themselves how much weight it merits; or at least intelligently question the quality of information. Having said that, though, let me add that I have nothing against sharing information from other websites, per se. For example, I often post Shakta-related newspaper articles here: (1) to keep people informed of the day-to-day relevance of the path, its deities and ideas all over the world; and (2) to "archive" those farflung articles in a place where those who seek it can find it. Shakta- related news crops upeverywhere, but there is no one place that brings it all together -- unless we all work to make *this* forum such a place. And again, a source must be given, and permissions obtained wherever possible. (In fact, a number of columnists have been kind enough to join this group upon receiving our request for reproduction. People who write seriously about Shakta subjects are few and far between; and they tend to be broadly interested in their topic!) When linking information from "spiritual" sites -- it's just fair to link back to the source. We have here a gathering of people who are interested in this particular topic; so just as our "links" section can act as a guide to related sites, so can our posts. Most members are very good about this, and I have no problem with the practice. For example, I cite a lot of material by my guru, Sri Amritananda Natha Saraswati, with a link back to his websites so that interested people can read more. Nothing mysterious and secretive about it -- I asked him one day if it was okay for me to do it, and he said sure go ahead. Simple as that. Sometimes we post pictures from Exotic India; a firm we love and frequently promote as reliable, high-quality and utterly trustworthy when you're looking for original Indian artworks -- including Hindu paintings and statuary. Between Nora and I, we've sent a lot of business their way. The work on our homepage is predominantly work that members have purchased and own (for example, Sarvambikesha from the front page, the Srividya Matangi, the saffron Mahishasura Mardini and others are all hanging in my home; others - the SaptaMatrika and Ganga come immediately to mind - are in Nora's home. And obviously, Kochu's collections are in a class by themselves). Other stuff like the calendar art (some of it antique) and anonymously copied classical works are just public domain. I bought a bunch of it from an Indian antiquities dealer on eBay. Who knows who's got ownership rights. If anyone comes forward as a legitimate, documented owner and complains about our usage (and in four years or more no one has), I'll gladly remove the offending pieces. And so on. There's nothing new under the sun. There's very little that is truly original, especially in such an ancient, deep and multilayered path as Shaktism. But when we know whence something comes, so should you. Aum Maatangyai Namahe
Guest guest
Hi DB! I do appreciate how accurate and careful you are with your posts. I really respect the way that you and Nora approach this. It makes the group so much more trustworthy. As for that particular site, I was just wondering how a more informed practicioner might view it. I wasn't sure if my impression was correct or not. Thanks for reminding me about Exotic India. I can't afford anything until I find work again, but I remember enjoying the site very much. Thank you again for all the work you do. Guest guest
Namaste! Guess what!? I had 2 interviews today! That's my first since I began job hunting 3 months ago. The funny thing is that I am part of a program that has a process for self evaluation and recently I went through that and one of the first things to be revealed was that I had a problem with my faith in Devi and my faith in my ability to get another job. So I began praying to Her for help with these things and BINGO I've got these 2 interviews. Now, it's not the same as having a job and not the same as having the right job, but the thing about being unemployed is that it is very hard on the spirit and just having the chance to interview has lifted my spirits considerably. Thank you all, and Devi especially, for your support. It means more than you know. Guest guest
Jai Ma! Yes, it seems to be Murphy's Yogic Law. When our faith is weakest, our sadhana is weakest, and soon our lives begin to fall apart in one way or another. And as we renew our faith and dive bravely back into our worship of Her, the blessings start pouring in. At least, this is how it works in my life!! Now if I can only follow my own advice, maybe I can pull rent together, and pay off health insurance before I lose it.... Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma MMMmmmmaaaaaaaaaa!!
