Guest guest Posted April 8, 2004 Report Share Posted April 8, 2004 NEW DELHI (April 8, 2004): The first-ever all-women Indian expedition to the world's highest mountain peak, Mount Everest, through the traditional south col route is planned to be launched next year by the Army. Announcing this here today Brig V K Chopra, Deputy Director General of the Army Adventure wing, said more than 100 women in uniform had volunteered for the expedition to the 8,848 metre high peak and the 24 member team would be chosen from them. Though Indian women have climbed the peak in mixed expeditions, this is for the first time that an all women team be making a bid for the peak. He said Army was also launching another major expedition to the world third highest peak 8,598 metre high Mount Kangchenjunga from the eastern ridge route in north Sikkim this october. This would be the army's second bid on the peak earlier army climbers have summited the peak in 1977. Brig Chopra said that Army Adventure foundation was organising for the first time in India a trithalon involving mountain running for 11 kms, mountain cycling over a distance of 16 kms and white water rafting over the same distance for the Army Challenge cup in Shivpuri in Uttaranchal from May 4.
