On my way to the bank

to cash my check at the end of the week

I see a lot of outstretched hands

Women, men and children

begging in the street

but I've got me and my own to feed.

Hunger, hunger.

In the supermarket check out line

I read a magazine to pass the time

Slender bodies with made up faces

beckon from the glossy pages:

"Think how perfect life would be

if you could only look like me."

Hunger, hunger.

Shop windows offer self-reflection

Basic needs suffer rejection

Work as hard as I am able

to keep food untouched on the table.

Body thin and wallet fat -

all of our dreams reduced to that.

Hunger, hunger...

Amen!

Mary Ann, you are kicking spiritual ass right now. You

are a lion, roaring back with strength and love at all

of life's adversities. I love you, sister!

pranams,

Dear Mary Ann,

Your poem reminded me of this famous verse from the Aparajita Stutih of

the Devi Mahatyam:

ya devi sarvabhutesu ksudha rupena samsthita

namas tasyai namas tasyai namas tayai namo namah

5. 26-28. 'Salutations again and again to the Devi who abides in all

beings in the form of hunger.

Thanks for your contribution.

Om shantih shantih shantih.

My favorite is this one:

Ya Devi sarvabhuteshu bhrantirupena, namastasyai,

namastasyai, namastasyai, namo namaha...

Salutations again and again to the Devi who resides in

all beings in the form of error.

What it means to me is this: Even our so-called

mistakes are part of the divinity within all of us. In

other words, there are no mistakes, and Devi is all

that we are.

jai ma....

Dear Santo:

You are welcome, and thank you for sharing what the song

evoked for you. I am pleased that it brought the Devi Mahatmyam

to mind.

Om shantih shantih shantih.
