BANGI: Gifts and flowers may have meant something for mothers yesterday but 40

of them experienced Mothers Day with a different kind of joy.

Their children showed their love and respect by taking part in a pathapuja

ceremony at the Sri Retnagar Temple here on Saturday.

The Hindu ceremony is an occasion to honour four symbolic revered figures –

mothers, the goddess Letchmi, the earth and the cow.

In the ceremony, children wash their mothers' feet with water first, then milk,

before applying sandalwood paste.

They then place vermilion powder on the feet, prostrate and kiss their mothers'

perfumed feet.

Once this is over, each of them expresses their love and gratitude to their

mothers and narrates the things they appreciate and like about them.

Finally the children gave their mothers gifts and serve them meals on a banana

leaf.

By performing this ceremony, the children are supposed to reap a lot of grace

from their mothers' blessings.

The ceremony has been a tradition for worshippers at the temple for the past 10

years and the temple's priest Ramanuja Muniandy, 58, is hoping to carry on the

meaningful tradition for a long time to come.

“This ceremony gives an opportunity to the children to appreciate their mother

in a religious manner rather than in a material context,” he said.

For siblings R. Prema Suhanya, 29, and Prema Latta, 19, performing the ritual

was very meaningful.

They said their mother, G. Gansrani, 54, was there for them through thick and

thin.

“My mother was there for me through all my ups and downs,” said Prema Latta.

“She is the only person who truly understands me,” she said.

In Chinmaya vidyalayas I think this is mandatory. To have matru pooja. I do not

know the date. But I know it is not on the western "mother's day".
