Guest guest
Hello! Someone posted a photo and matra to the goddess Citra sometime ago. I would appreciate if someone would please break the the mantra by syllables and if possible tell me where the accented syllables are in each word. Here is her matra: OM vichitraayai vidmahe mahaanityaayai dhiimahi tanno nityaa prachodayaat Those double "a's" that occur are a bit confusing to me. As always, thank you for your time. If anyone would care to translate it, that too woule be greatly appeciated. Thank you. Eric
Guest guest
Eric, I hope one of the group's Sanskrit/mantra experts can direct you to an MP3 of the mantra or a similar resource that might help with meter and pronunciation. In the meantime.... With regards to syllabic stress and long vowels, see Devi Bhakta's message #9943, in response to my query about pronunciation. Here's what Devadatta Kali has to say about syllabic stress [from the pronunciation guide in his _In Praise of the Goddess_]: "The accentation of syllables in Sanskrit is weaker than in English. The stres falls on the penultimate (next to last) syllable when that syllable contains a long vowel, a diphthong (e, ai, o, au), or a short vowel followed by two or more consonants. Otherwise, the stress falls on the antepenultimate, or preceding syllable." You may also find the following two pronunciation guides helpful: http://www.selfdiscoveryportal.com/cmSanskritPron.htm http://www.sanskrit.org/Sanskrit/Sanskritpronunication.pdf , "Eric Otto" <eottoe2001> wrote: > >[ mantra to the goddess Citra ] > I would appreciate if someone would please > break the the mantra by > syllables and if possible tell me > where the accented syllables are in > each word. > > Here is her mantra: > > OM vichitraayai vidmahe mahaanityaayai dhiimahi > tanno nityaa prachodayaat > > Those double "a's" that occur are a bit confusing to me. > [....] If anyone would care to > translate it, that too would be greatly appreciated.
