Bikini controversy

I wish to say one thing concerning the issue of

bikinis and lingerie produced in Italy bearing images

of Rama and other Hindu deities.

I believe that this is due to ignorance rather

than malice. Italians have no particular reason to

hate Hindus, as there are few Hindus in Italy and

Italy is very far from India.

I live in the United States for many years. I have

seen thousands of bikinis advertized. It seems that

the manufacturers compete to see whose product will

get the most attention on the beach. They are printed

with fluorescent colors or pretty orchids or photos of

Elvis Presley or US flags or silly slogans such as "If

you can read this, you are too close."

I suspect that they decided to try something

symbolic of a land far away, India, a land regarded in

the West as strange, mystical, and exotic. They made

the mistake of using Hindu religious art instead of

some secular design. This indicates to me lack of

knowledge about Hinduism and about Indian culture, not

any any attempt to offend or insult.
