Guest guest
Bhubaneswar, INDIA (June 18, 2004) - An Indian man chopped off his tongue at the temple of a Hindu goddess in eastern India, hoping the sacrifice would please the deity and get him a job, police said today. Prasanta Palei, 22, was admitted to a hospital after the incident yesterday and was out of danger, said police inspector S K Rath, the local officer. Palei is a resident of Madheipur village in the Puri district, about 70km east of Bhubaneswar, capital of Orissa state. He took a large knife to the temple of Maa Tarini, a Hindu goddess, and chopped off his tongue, the officer said. Rath said the man was desperate for a job because of the poor financial condition of his family. Ritual animal sacrifice is common in many parts of India. Incidents of human sacrifice, or of people chopping off parts of their bodies to please deities are also reported, though rarely.
