Jay Ma,

>From what I saw in Komatuli the idol makers are basically following family

traditions.....they may even have trouble explaining the process because it is

the type of craft they begin at a young age and just learn naturally by

compying their parents. The Durga Ma images generally are large highly decorated

and

include Kartikk, Ganesh, Lafshmi and Saraswati and she is poised slaying

Mahisasura, but....

Peopl often order custom Murthis if they wish and there did not seem to be

any hard and fast rules regarding this. I think it's more about art for them.

You see the comon designs and also many variations. It did not seem to be very

strict to me. Most of the makers aren't very wealthy people and it seems to be

poorer classes who are building them, until puja season of course when

everyone is ordering the images!

Then they get so much work it's unbelievable, but basically all their work is

in the period of time for Puja Season.

Namstre Alexandra,

On statute making, does that apply to idol making from Kumartuli in

Calcutta(May be Swastik can give input on this ?). I reliase the south indian

sculpturor rely heavily on Stahapathi shashtras but do the Bengal idol makers

have same scriptural reference point or is it only family tradition ?

Anybody ??

Jai Maa!!!

When Indian painters paint a deity, do they then have to follow certain rules?

I ask because I know that as far as the making of statues is concerned, there

are very precise rules to be followed. Each and every part of body and face are

laid down in the Shastras of iconogayphy. But what about paintings?
