I guess this is a known spiritual teaching. We are all exposed to stinkiness every now and then, and to bland or bad-tasting food. I think ultimately there is no need to seek out or prolong those experiences any more than to seek out or prolong experiences of delicious aromas and delectable foodstuffs. Somebody told me once that when he received his Panchadasi Mantra, somehow he does not feel hunger at all. So weather you eat things that are tamasic or sattvic means nothing. If you do not feel hunger and your taste to the flavours of the food does not matter anymore, and you eat only for what is required by the body, does tamasic and sattvic food means anything at all? So I am rather amazed at all these fuss about Onions and Garlic, for I personally believe that once the food enters our body, it automatically being purified by the divinity that is within us. It is us [the body] that change the tamasic food into sattvic. All food is good and it is us who likes to make this distinguish about being tamasic and sattvic. The same manner as how we go around trying to distinguish between being superior and inferior. What is superior and inferior food? I think detective Mango Phd makes a very interesting point : Traditionally poor people eat garlic and onions to mask the taste of poor foods, for that reason the higher classes don't eat them, thinking that they pollute the body. Not that people understand this any longer, it's just historical fact. This is the classical example of how social condition influence the religious thoughts. And I think this make more sense.
