Spreading Hatred

People tend to want to see God as looking like themselves and their

family. African-Americans often quote Bible scripture to explain that

Jesus was a Black man with dark brown skin and wooly hair. Although the

Buddha was a Kshatriya prince from northern India, in Japan and other

far-Eastern countries the Buddha is portrayed as Japanese.

A young South Asian man, fascinated that I was attending the Hindu Temple

in Flushing, asked what Ishtadevata I had. When I replied Sarasvati Devi

and Lord Shiva, he laughed, saying, "Of course you would worship the

Deities who had white skin!"

But Hindus know that the Devas are masters of Maya. Any Deity can assume

any form desired (or no form at all!). It is a mistake to assume that

Ganesha is likely to manifest in your life as a red-skinned human with an

elephant's face. At least, not on the material plane.

Furthermore, if there is any validity to reincarnation, I suspect that

all of us have had many lifetimes experiencing every race and ethnicity,

gender and sexual orientation. We at some time have been extremely

wealthy and dispairingly poor. The point is to treasure the light

provided by life's experience, and not to solely identify with the shape

and structure of the lamp.

The Hindu Temple in Flushing has two sculpted wheels on its facade,

making it resemble a chariot. One wheel has an image of Ganesha dancing

in its center. The other wheel has symbols of world religions: Jewish

six-pointed Star and Christian Cross, Buddhist Dharma-Wheel and Moslem

Crescent and Star, and of course a Hindu Om. All paths lead to the

Truth, though Mortals call it by different names.
