The pilgrims, undeterred by a sharp rise in guerrilla violence in the disputed region, will carry a mace (Chhari) from Machail in Bhaderwah to the Ma Chandi (an incarnate of Durga, Hindu goddess of power) shrine in Kishtwar, a distance of 170 km. The pilgrimage that skirts icy streams and glacier-fed lakes and winds through dense pines and lasts five days. The pilgrimage has been going on for the last 15 years. Normally, there are 25,000-30,000 pilgrims who undertake this yatra.
