Guest guest
Ranchi, INDIA (September 16, 2004) - Dhananjoy Chatterjee, who was executed last month for raping and murdering a schoolgirl, will be portrayed as a demon in the upcoming Durga Puja festival by sculptors in Jharkhand. Idols of Dhananjoy will be made along with other demons like Mahishasur, who symbolises evil in Hindu mythology. Durga Puja is celebrated in eastern India as a victory of good over evil. Every year it sees millions visiting marquees where idols are installed depicting the killing of Mahishasur by goddess Durga. During the festival, sculptors often model the forces of evil on real-life figures and incidents, and Dhananjoy seems to have taken that leap to notoriety this time. He was hanged in neighbouring West Bengal last month for raping and murdering a schoolgirl. While the West Bengal government has banned idols of Dhananjoy, artistes in Jharkhand are modelling their demons on him for the festival, which falls next month. "In Jharkhand, there is no such ban and we can go ahead with the idea," said Puskin Kumar, a sculptor here. Added Abhijit Pal, a sculptor in Jamshedpur "We are getting offers from clients to make idols of Dhananjoy for Durga Puja. The idols will be put along with those of other demons." He said "Hundreds of thousands throng to see the idols of the goddess during Durga Puja. This is the best medium to reflect evil and create a sense of responsibility among people to make them desist from such crimes." Most sculptors in Jharkhand originally hail from West Bengal. "Durga Puja is a festival that shows the victory of good over evil. And we do not find anything wrong in portraying present day evil. The purpose is to sensitise people to make them desist from evil and work for good," said another sculptor. The idea has found support from several organisers of the Durga Puja. "We have asked our sculptor to portray Dhananjoy as an evil force," said Vishal, who is part of a team organising the celebrations here. Some, however, say such sculptures will only serve to amuse people rather than sensitise them against evil. Source: The Hindustan Times, New Delhi. Guest guest
Is that good or bad? Do you think news stories like that are worth posting, or just a waste of time? (Not being snarky, by the way ... this kind of feedback is useful! ;-) ) DB , "Detective_Mongo_Phd" <detective_mongo_phd@h...> wrote: > These are interesting stories but I don' know how.
