Guest guest
> i even cringe at mothers exposing themselves >to their own children in bikinis, plunging necklines and mini- >skirts. To strip the Shakti of all modesty is unforgivable! But to >expose Her sitting in that position with Her private parts exposed >is beyond words. Tell that to the temple-builders of classic Hindu architecture. It seems that much has changed in the past eight centuries or so. A couple years ago I gave a slide presentation on the many forms of Goddess at a local mandir. One of the devotees warned me because of the conservatism of the congregation, not to include any naked or partly naked images. I had already thought of this, being sensitive that some would take it as offensive, and so ended up omitting many classic Devi murthis from the presentation, as well as many beautiful Goddess icons from other places. I understand your desire to see respect for the Mother, but disagree about how that is done. I think you are making the fundamental error of assuming that respecting her somehow involves buying into the degradation of the Yoni. Venerating the Yoni is part of adoring her in all her aspects. Is she not also Kamakshi, Kamakhya, Mahabhogaa, Mahaa-kaamesha-maishi? Ironically, even under the name of Lajja Gauri Indian sculptors carved her displaying the power of the Yoni. This is something majestic and awe-inspiring. -- Max Dashu Suppressed Histories Archives Global Women's Studies http://www.suppressedhistories.net
